California Business Search
Provides access to more than two million records filed in California's Secretary of States Office's corporation and limited partnership/limited liability company databases. Includes answers to the most frequently requested business entity information, such as address, status, Secretary of State file number, date of filing, and agent for service of process. Includes order forms for requesting documents and information regarding checking and reserving corporate, limited partnership, and limited liability company names.

California Professional and Business License Handbook
The Handbook (sixth edition, 1999) is a guide to the "state licenses, permits, registrations, or certifications required by law to do business in California." Each entry specifies, as applicable, fees and examinations required, average time to process applications, and other information. There is general legal information on doing business in California; the site warns, "Local or federal business requirements are not included in this handbook."

D&B Small Business Solutions
Dun & Bradstreet's database allows you "to find a business by name, location, D&B D-U-N-S® Number, or telephone number from the D&B database of over 13 million U.S. companies. You'll be provided with key information including address, telephone number, URLs, business principal or chief executive officer, and business size, all at no cost."

Entrepreneur.com
This site, designed for the entrepreneur or small business owner, contains tips on everything from starting a business to finding funds. Includes franchise and business opportunity databases, free e-mail accounts, a chat room, and classifieds. Contains articles from Entrepreneur Magazine, Business Start-Ups Online, and Entrepreneur's HomeOffice. Also available in Spanish as Soy Entrepreneur.

Fedforms
Forms from federal agencies are often hard to track down. This site provides easy access to the forms of the 500 most popular government services. Fedforms is searchable by title, agency, form number, or keyword. Includes IRS, social security, small business, passport, immigration, military, and more.

Internal Revenue Service: Small Business/Self-Employed
This site provides a one-stop guide for employers to federal and state tax and wage reporting information. It walks employers through the process of starting a business, hiring employees, and understanding reporting requirements. It also links to the commonly used tax forms and publications, electronic filing services, state tax offices, and other tax-related Web sites.

Nolo's Legal Encyclopedia
This site has legal information in non-legal language including wills, estate planning, retirement, elder care, small business, employment, independent contractors, Internet, trademarks, copyright, patent, trade secrets, landlords, tenants, real estate, consumer, travel, neighbors, pets, family law, living together, debt, bankruptcy, taxes, immigration, lawsuits, mediation, personal injury, criminal law, cars, and tickets. There are annotated lists of recommended Internet resources for each subject. Great content from Nolo Press, a major publisher of self-help law books.

SCORE: Counselors to America's Small Business
The Service Corps of Retired Executives gives small business owners guidance in establishing and maintaining successful enterprises. The Web site offers disaster advice; locations of local chapters; links to calculators, free software, business plans, trade shows, and other business resources; news and informational articles; and free, confidential counseling by e-mail. Counselors representing more than 600 skills are available to assist in locating investors, setting goals, veterans' business issues, and other matters.

SBA: Office of International Trade
A part of the United States Small Business Association (SBA), the Office of International Trade "works in cooperation with other federal agencies and public- and private-sector groups to encourage small business exports and to assist small businesses seeking to export." The site contains FAQs and publications, including a guide to exporting; online forms; information on trade finance programs; and lists of events, banks participating in SBA programs, and Export Assistance Centers.

Start-Up Kits
These kits offer industry, market, and operations information for over 40 types of businesses.
